Aibel has celebrated the upcoming sail-away of its third and final offshore wind converter platform for the Dogger Bank C project with a ceremony at its yard in Haugesund, Norway.
The event, which included a rope-cutting ceremony led by Norwegian Minister of Climate and Environment Andreas Bjelland Eriksen, marks a key milestone in the development of the Dogger Bank offshore wind farm. The celebration was attended by representatives from the Dogger Bank project as well as officials from Aibel and Hitachi Energy.
The Dogger Bank wind farm is being developed as a joint venture between SSE Renewables (40%), Equinor (40%), and Vargronn (20%). Once completed, the wind farm, spanning three phases—A, B, and C—will generate a total capacity of 3.6GW, enough to power around 6 million UK homes.
The project recently saw the installation of the world’s first unmanned High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) substation for offshore wind at Dogger Bank in 2023. The HVDC offshore substations, used across all three phases, are part of the wind farm’s design.
SSE Renewables is leading the development and construction of the wind farm, while Equinor will manage its operations throughout the expected 35-year operational life of the project.
The completion of the third platform marks a critical step towards realizing one of the largest offshore wind farms in the world, contributing significantly to the UK’s renewable energy capacity.
