EirGrid, Ireland’s Transmission System Operator, has launched a procurement programme worth over €1 billion aimed at supporting the delivery of an offshore electricity grid in Ireland. This initiative is part of the country’s strategy to enhance offshore renewable energy generation and connect it to the national grid.
The programme, which was announced at the 2025 WindEurope conference in Copenhagen, is aligned with Ireland’s plan for a roll-out of offshore renewables and infrastructure that began in 2021. The country’s offshore energy strategy, initially focused on the east coast and later expanding to the south coast, is seen as a key element of Ireland’s efforts to transition to cleaner energy sources.
EirGrid’s procurement efforts will focus on operation and maintenance (O&M) activities, which are essential to integrate offshore renewable generation with the onshore grid. The contracts will cover a wide range of services, including inspection and maintenance support, marine logistics, subsea inspection and repair, asset health monitoring, and safety services. Other areas include warehousing, training, and helicopter intervention support.
Michael Mahon, EirGrid’s Chief Infrastructure Officer, stated, “It is estimated that the procurements being launched today will be valued in excess of €1bn, which truly demonstrates the intent to begin delivering offshore renewables at scale – a critical step towards a cleaner energy future for Ireland.”
In addition to the O&M procurement programme, EirGrid is also launching a separate initiative related to its Powering Up Offshore – South Coast Enduring Connection Policy (ECP) works, which includes high voltage equipment.
Mahon encouraged companies across the supply chain to engage with the programme, saying, “I would encourage the entire supply chain in these areas to engage with EirGrid and help us to harness the significant offshore wind resource that exists in Irish waters.”
This announcement marks a significant step in Ireland’s offshore renewable energy ambitions, with the procurement programme set to play a central role in the country’s energy transition.
