Eolus and Hydro Rein have successfully completed the construction of the 260-megawatt (MW) Stor-Skälsjön onshore wind farm, located in the municipalities of Sundsvall and Timrå in northern Sweden. The wind farm, comprising 42 Siemens Gamesa turbines, is expected to generate approximately 800 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of renewable electricity annually.
The project, which was acquired jointly by Eolus and Hydro Rein from Enercon in June 2021, has now reached operational status. In 2022, 75% of the project was sold to German asset manager MEAG. Eolus sold its entire 51% stake, while Hydro Rein sold 24% and retains a 25% ownership share.
As part of the agreement, both Eolus and Hydro Rein constructed the wind farm on behalf of MEAG under a Construction Management Agreement. Eolus will also provide ongoing asset management services for the wind farm under a 15-year contract.
Eolus CEO Per Witalisson commented on the completion: “We are pleased that the project has now reached completion, and we look forward to continuing our collaboration with Hydro Rein and MEAG under the asset management agreement for the facility.”
In addition to its energy generation, the Stor-Skälsjön wind farm will support local communities through annual grants. The first round of grants was distributed in 2024, benefiting local schools, community centers, and sports and outdoor associations. These contributions will continue throughout the lifespan of the facility.
The completion of the Stor-Skälsjön wind farm represents a significant step in Sweden's renewable energy development and demonstrates ongoing cooperation among international and local stakeholders in the sector.
