Cadeler has successfully installed the first of 100 turbines at RWE’s 1.4GW Sofia offshore wind farm, located off the east coast of England. The milestone marks a key step in the development of one of the UK’s largest offshore wind projects.
The installation was completed by the jack-up vessel Wind Peak, which arrived at the site on March 22 after being loaded with the first batch of six Siemens Gamesa 14MW turbines from the manufacturer’s blade factory in Hull.
First power from the Sofia wind farm is expected to be generated later this year, with full commissioning slated for 2026.
Thomas Michel, Chief Operating Officer of RWE Offshore Wind, commented on the progress, stating, “This is yet another great construction milestone for Sofia, one of RWE’s flagship offshore wind farms in the UK. We’re looking forward to Sofia making a significant contribution to the UK’s Clear Power 2030 targets after commissioning, which is expected in 2026.”
Once completed, the Sofia wind farm will play a crucial role in the UK’s efforts to meet its renewable energy goals and support the country’s transition to cleaner power.
