Henrik Andersen, group president and chief executive of Vestas, has been elected as the new chair of WindEurope for an 18-month term. The announcement comes at a pivotal moment for the wind industry, as Europe ramps up its energy transition and strives to enhance its industrial competitiveness.
In addition to Andersen’s appointment, Rasmus Errboe, group president and CEO of Ørsted, was elected vice-chair of the association, which represents the wind energy sector across Europe.
Andersen takes on the chairmanship at a time when Europe is accelerating efforts to meet ambitious energy targets. Several key regulatory packages are expected to be finalized, passed, and implemented at the national level during his term.
“We are in a defining moment for Europe’s future,” Andersen said in a statement. “We need an industry and an energy source that can deliver home-grown, secure and affordable energy, while strengthening Europe’s competitiveness. Wind energy can contribute to all of this, and now is the time for Europe to bolster its wind industry.”
He added, “The European Commission and member states have set high targets, but this momentum must translate ambition into implementation.”
Andersen’s primary objectives as chair will focus on three key areas: driving European competitiveness, accelerating electrification, and strengthening the market environment for wind energy. His leadership will be crucial in ensuring that Europe maintains its position as a global leader in the wind energy sector.
“I am honoured to serve as chair of WindEurope in this crucial time for Europe and for wind energy,” Andersen said. “I look forward to working closely with vice chair Rasmus Errboe, and extend my thanks to the WindEurope members for trusting in me as your chair for the coming eighteen months.”
The election of Andersen and Errboe reflects the wind energy sector’s continued efforts to navigate the challenges and opportunities presented by Europe’s transition to cleaner, more sustainable energy sources.
