Hellenic Cables, part of Cenergy Holdings, has secured a contract to supply and install export cables for the 600MW Dunkirk offshore wind farm in France. The company, in partnership with Asso.subsea, was awarded a turnkey contract by Réseau de Transport d'Électricité (RTE), the French transmission system operator.
The Dunkirk wind farm, with a planned capacity of between 500MW and 600MW, will feature two 225kV HVAC export cable links to transfer renewable energy to the French national grid. Hellenic Cables will design, manufacture, and supply 32 kilometers of submarine cables for the project, along with 38 kilometers of underground cables for the associated onshore links.
In addition to providing the cables, Hellenic Cables will handle on-site jointing, testing, and commissioning of the cable links. Installation partner Asso.subsea will oversee the transportation, laying, and protection of the submarine cables, utilizing its specialized fleet and in-house-designed equipment.
The submarine cables will be produced at Hellenic Cables' facility in Corinth, Greece, while the land cables will be manufactured at the company's expanding facility in Thiva, Greece.
The project involves challenging cable laying and burial operations in shallow waters, marking a significant step in the development of France's renewable energy infrastructure.
“Asso.subsea's expertise in subsea cable installation and protection ensures the seamless integration of these critical components into the wind farm's network,” said Alexandros Tziotakis, Chief Operating Officer of Asso.subsea. “This project marks our return to France, following successful projects such as Gruissan, Fécamp, and Saint-Brieuc, and highlights our commitment to supporting Europe's energy transition.”
Kostas Savvakis, General Manager at Hellenic Cables, emphasized the importance of the project, stating, “This project is an important step forward in supporting France's renewable energy goals, and Hellenic Cables is honoured to continue its collaboration with RTE. Our role in the Dunkirk offshore wind farm highlights our commitment to delivering reliable and sustainable energy solutions.”
The Dunkirk offshore wind farm is expected to play a key role in advancing France's renewable energy capacity and its efforts to meet European sustainability objectives.
