Goldwind has announced it will supply 242 MW of turbine capacity for the Overberg Wind Farm project in South Africa, developed by independent power producer Red Rocket. Under the deal, Goldwind will provide 39 units of its 6.2 MW medium-speed permanent magnet (MSPM) turbines to the project, which is being built in two phases.
Located near Swellendam in the Western Cape, the Overberg Wind Farm is set to have a total capacity of 380 MW. The first phase of the project has already reached financial close, with Richards Bay Minerals (RBM), a subsidiary of Rio Tinto Group, securing the first 230 MW of the farm’s export capacity. This initial phase is expected to deliver an estimated 750 GWh of clean energy annually to RBM.
Goldwind expressed its confidence in the project, with a spokesperson commenting, “With our commitment to technological reliability, exceptional grid adaptability, and the trust of local partners, we are proud to support South Africa’s energy transition and sustainable future.
Once fully operational, Overberg Wind Farm will be the largest privately developed wind farm in South Africa and will operate under a 20-year Power Purchase Agreement (PPA). Commercial operations are expected to begin in early 2027.
