RWE has received the first set of foundations for its 1,600 MW Nordseecluster wind project, located in the German North Sea. The eight foundations were delivered and offloaded at the Dutch base port of Eemshaven, marking a key milestone in the development of the large-scale renewable energy project.

Each foundation, approximately 85 meters long and weighing around 1,500 tonnes—equivalent to the weight of about 1,000 small cars—was manufactured by Dajin Heavy Industry. This year, a total of 45 monopile foundations will pass through Eemshaven, with 44 supporting the wind turbines and one designated to support the transformer substation.

The project will be carried out in two stages. Nordseecluster A, with a capacity of 660 MW, will feature 44 turbines, while Nordseecluster B, consisting of 60 turbines, will contribute an additional 900 MW. The wind turbines for Nordseecluster A are scheduled to be installed in 2026 and connected to the grid by early 2027, while Nordseecluster B is set to begin commercial operations by 2029.

RWE's Chief Operating Officer for Offshore Wind, Thomas Michel, commented on the achievement: “With the delivery and safe unloading of the first foundations by Dajin, we have passed an important milestone on the way to building our Nordseecluster. With an overall capacity of around 1.6 gigawatts, it is the largest wind project currently being built off the German coast.”

Eemshaven's Buss Terminal, which provides over 260,000 square meters of quay, storage, and traffic areas, has become a crucial hub for RWE's offshore wind projects. In addition to Nordseecluster, the terminal is handling foundations for RWE's Thor in Denmark and will serve as the base for the Dutch OranjeWind project.

The Nordseecluster project is expected to generate enough green electricity to power approximately 1.6 million households, contributing to Germany's transition to renewable energy.
