Downing Renewable Developments (DRD) has received planning approval for two battery energy storage system (BESS) projects in the UK, totaling a combined capacity of 140MW.

The developer was granted consent for a 40MW BESS project in Heanor, Derbyshire, located in the East Midlands, and for a 100MW BESS project near Rowley Regis in the West Midlands. Both projects were approved without any objections from the public, reflecting DRD’s commitment to community engagement and local benefits, including job creation and community payments.

The Rowley Regis project, named the Edwin Richards Energy Storage Park, will have the capacity to store enough energy to power up to 300,000 homes for two hours. The Heanor Energy Park is expected to store enough renewable energy to power 120,000 homes for the same period.

The successful approvals demonstrate DRD’s focus on advancing clean energy storage solutions while ensuring local communities benefit from the projects.
