Vestas Workers in Germany Resume Strike as Negotiations with IG Metall Fail

The strike action taken by workers in has reignited following the breakdown of talks between the renowned turbine manufacturer and the prominent union, . The strike, which had already spanned an impressive 73 days, was briefly interrupted in March when negotiations commenced with the hope of reaching a resolution by the end of the month.

Despite high expectations, the discussions proved fruitless, leading to the resumption of the strike by the 250 workers represented by IG Metall. Expressing his disappointment, Martin Bitter, the managing director of IG Metall Rendsburg, emphasized the lack of reliability demonstrated by Vestas during the negotiations. “Taking offers off the table from one day to the next does not meet our expectations of a reliable negotiating partner,” Bitter stated.

Bitter further emphasized the justifiability of the employees' demands for fair pay and improved working conditions. In his view, they deserve to be treated on an equal footing. His words reflect the determination and resolve of the workers, who have remained steadfast in their pursuit of better treatment and representation.

Vestas Deutschland expressed regret over the situation, acknowledging that IG Metall had informed them of their decision to halt the talks and resume striking. The company's spokesperson conveyed disappointment with the union's demands, considering them “simply not reasonable.”

“We brought forward a generous offer which was not accepted, and our following counterproposals were not recognized by IG Metall,” the spokesperson explained. “These proposals were made in the best interest of all our employees. IG Metall represents a minority of our colleagues, with less than 15% of Vestas Deutschland employees currently on strike. Nevertheless, the company remains committed to finding a collaborative solution.”
