Avangrid, the U.S.-based subsidiary of Iberdrola, has reached a milestone of 10 gigawatts (GW) in installed energy generating capacity, expanding its role in meeting growing electricity demands across the country.
The company operates a diversified portfolio of generation resources, including onshore wind, solar, hydropower, natural gas, and fuel cells, contributing to its total of 10.5GW in capacity. Avangrid's assets are spread across 24 states, with significant concentrations in the West, Midwest, Texas, and New England regions.
Pedro Azagra, CEO of Avangrid, commented: “With Americans across the country becoming more dependent on electricity, combined with the rapid growth of emerging industries like AI, the need for reliable energy has never been greater.” He added, “Avangrid is working to meet the needs of families and businesses across the country with a portfolio of energy generation projects providing more than 10 Gigawatts of power, delivering reliable, domestically produced energy to homes, schools, and industry.”
The company's existing capacity is strategically located, with approximately 3.8GW in the western U.S., 2.2GW in Texas and New Mexico, 2.7GW in the Midwest, and 1.7GW in the East. Avangrid has highlighted the economic contributions of its operations, noting that its assets support over 500 permanent jobs for operations and maintenance and contribute more than $50 million in property taxes annually.
The growing energy demand driven by electrification, new manufacturing initiatives, and the rise of data centers has further underscored the importance of Avangrid's expanding energy infrastructure. In response, the company is actively working on a pipeline of new projects. This includes partnerships with several technology companies on eight projects designed to support data centers, with additional projects in development to meet surging energy needs.
Azagra also noted, “With a pipeline of new projects in construction and development, we are focused every day on meeting the country's demand for energy today and in the future.”
Looking ahead, Avangrid is set to continue its expansion, with plans to add approximately 27GW of new generation capacity to its portfolio.
