Salzgitter will provide steel for 36 of the 72 wind turbine towers set to be used in Denmark’s 1GW Thor offshore wind farm, under a contract with Siemens Gamesa. The agreement involves the delivery of approximately 25,000 tonnes of heavy plates for Siemens Gamesa’s GreenerTowers, a product designed to reduce CO2 emissions. The plates will be supplied by Salzgitter’s subsidiaries Ilsenburger Grobblech (ILG) and Mannesmann Grobblech (MGB), and will be delivered to wind tower manufacturers Windar in Spain and Welcon in Denmark between March and October 2025.
The GreenerTowers, part of Siemens Gamesa’s portfolio since 2024, are designed to be used for both onshore and offshore wind turbines. The first use of this technology will be at the Thor offshore wind farm, located on the Danish North Sea coast near Jutland. The project is expected to be completed by the end of 2027.
Oliver Laubner, Sales Manager at Ilsenburger Grobblech, expressed enthusiasm about the project’s impact on sustainability: “We are delighted that ILG and MGB are the first certified suppliers to make a significant contribution to reducing the global CO2eq footprint by supplying low-emission heavy plate.”
Laubner further highlighted the company’s investment in new equipment to support the wind industry: “To this end, we have invested in new equipment to be able to supply such wind projects with 18 – 24 meter long plates. This includes, for example, the investment in the transport line for finishing with an overhead crane and a mobile roller table extension.”
Maximilian Schnippering, Head of Sustainability at Siemens Gamesa, noted the broader environmental impact of the GreenerTowers: “If all towers installed by the company in one year were replaced with GreenerTowers, it would be equivalent to removing over 466,000 cars from European roads for a year. Innovations like this are crucial to achieving our sustainability goals.”
The steel for the towers will be produced using scrap-based electrical steel and renewable energy at Peiner Trager, with additional slabs sourced from European suppliers. These efforts are part of Siemens Gamesa’s ongoing commitment to reducing carbon emissions in its manufacturing processes.
The Thor offshore wind farm will be a key project in Denmark’s push for renewable energy, contributing significantly to the country’s green energy goals.
