Siemens Energy has secured a $200 million contract with Brazil's Eletrobras to upgrade a crucial electricity transmission line connecting the Itaipu hydroelectric plant with the states of Sao Paulo and Parana. The project, which will cost roughly $1 billion reais and is set to finish by 2026, will modernize more than 800 kilometers of the energy transmission line to accommodate the country's increasing generation of solar and wind power.
As Brazil transitions to cleaner energy sources, its power grid faces the challenge of handling intermittent generation. Andre Clark, Siemens Energy Vice President for Latin America, emphasized the need to upgrade the energy transmission line, which was initially designed for hydroelectric generation.
The project will also prioritize cybersecurity measures to protect the critical infrastructure from potential cyber attacks. Siemens Energy's collaboration with Eletrobras subsidiary Furnas aims to ensure the secure and efficient delivery of renewable energy to Sao Paulo and Parana.
