EEW SPC has secured an agreement with Vattenfall to deliver 112 monopiles for the Nordlicht 1 and 2 offshore wind farms in the German North Sea. The deal follows EEW SPC's nomination as a preferred supplier for the project last October, with the company set to process around 141,000 tonnes of steel for the venture.
The Nordlicht 1 wind farm, with a 980MW capacity, will feature 68 monopiles, while Nordlicht 2, with a 630MW connection, will require 44 foundations. The steel for the project will be produced at EEW SPC's Rostock facility, with each monopile having a diameter of 10 meters.
This marks the fifth offshore wind project managed by EEW SPC for Vattenfall, continuing their established partnership. Sebastian Mönnich, Head of Project Management at EEW SPC, expressed his satisfaction with the collaboration, stating, “We are delighted that we are now managing our fifth offshore wind project for Vattenfall as part of our well-established partnership. This project also contributes to the further expansion of renewable energies in the German North Sea.
Offshore construction for the Nordlicht 1 and 2 projects is expected to begin in 2026, pending a final investment decision anticipated in 2025, with full operational status targeted for 2028. Vattenfall is leading the development of the Nordlicht cluster, with BASF as a key partner owning 49% of the projects.
Production of the monopiles at EEW SPC's Rostock site is scheduled to take place between the end of 2025 and mid-2027. Once operational, the Nordlicht offshore wind farms will generate enough green energy to power over 1.7 million German households.
