The global push towards sources is driving innovations in production. ABS, a leading maritime classification society, is partnering with Korean industry leaders to produce a feasibility study for a near-shore floating platform that will produce and liquefy green .

The study, which will be included in a report from the Jeolla Province, aims to determine the viability of a green hydrogen production and liquefaction facility at a near-shore floating platform, using offshore wind power. ABS is partnering with the Institute of Energy Technology (KENTECH), HD Korea Shipbuilding and Offshore Engineering (HD KSOE), Linde Korea, and Linde PLC to undertake this ambitious project.

The Korean government is committed to supporting commercial-scale green hydrogen production to increase energy self-sufficiency. As part of its efforts to decarbonize the maritime industry, ABS has already approved in principle (AIP) HD Hyundai Group's offshore green hydrogen production platform.

ABS Vice President for Global Sustainability, Panos Koutsourakis, highlighted the importance of green hydrogen in achieving a net-zero future. He said, “Green hydrogen is a critical component in any net-zero scenario. ABS is leading the maritime industry in decarbonization and sustainability solutions, contributing our technical knowledge to develop comprehensive studies such as this one. We are proud to work with key partners to design a roadmap for the clean energy transition.”

This partnership is a significant step towards reducing carbon emissions in the maritime industry and achieving global net-zero targets. By utilizing green hydrogen as a renewable energy source, the industry can take a huge leap towards sustainable and responsible operations.
