Plans to establish a large-scale manufacturing and technology hub in the West Midlands have taken a significant step forward, with the announcement of a £23 million funding package aimed at powering up the Coventry and Warwick Gigapark. The funding will support the installation of a dedicated energy supply designed to accommodate large-scale battery production at the site.

The Gigapark, which is located within the region's flagship Investment Zone, will include Greenpower Park, the UK's Centre for Electrification and Clean Energy. This investment by the West Midlands Combined Authority (WMCA) is expected to make the site development-ready, helping the region attract international investment from battery manufacturers and other businesses in the vehicle and supply chains.

The fully developed Gigapark is projected to create up to 6,000 jobs, including positions in battery manufacturing and the associated electric vehicle and energy storage sectors. In addition to the energy infrastructure, the funding will support further infrastructure development and technical assessments necessary for a detailed planning application.

Richard Parker, Mayor of the West Midlands, stated: “The Gigapark is going to make the West Midlands a global hub for cutting-edge battery technology, paving the way for a new era of electric vehicle manufacturing in and around our region. This Investment Zone funding is an exciting first step in making that vision a reality. It will bring in private investment, create thousands of quality jobs, boost the local economy, and help build a greener, more sustainable future.”

The Coventry & Warwick Gigapark is being developed through a partnership between Coventry City Council, Warwick District Council, and Warwickshire County Council. The main anchor site, Greenpower Park, is being delivered through a joint venture between Coventry Council and Coventry Airport. Greenpower Park is designed to be a hub for battery research, manufacturing, testing, recycling, and electrified logistics, supporting the UK's growing battery ecosystem.

This investment is seen as a key step in positioning the West Midlands as a leader in battery technology and electric vehicle manufacturing, aligning with the UK's broader goals to support clean energy and reduce carbon emissions.
