Masdar has announced its preferred suppliers and contractors for a groundbreaking round-the-clock solar and battery storage project in Abu Dhabi, which is set to become the largest of its kind in the world. The project will be developed in collaboration with Emirates Water and Electricity Company (EWEC).
JA Solar and Jinko Solar have been selected as the preferred suppliers for the photovoltaic (PV) modules, while CATL will provide the battery energy storage systems (BESS). The project will also see Larsen & Toubro and PowerChina serve as the preferred engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) contractors.
The gigascale project, which will feature a 5.2GW (dc) solar photovoltaic plant and a 19GWh battery storage system, is designed to deliver up to 1GW of baseload power 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Once completed, it will be the largest solar and battery storage project globally.
Abdulaziz Alobaidli, Masdar's Chief Operating Officer, commented on the significance of the project: “The record-breaking project we are developing with EWEC is a giant step forward in the clean energy transformation, overcoming the intermittency challenges of renewables and enabling the dispatch of clean energy 24 hours a day, seven days a week.” He also emphasized the importance of selecting high-quality partners, stating, “As Masdar's largest and most ambitious project to date, we made sure we are working with the best possible partners that will deliver to the highest standards.
Jinko Solar and JA Solar will each supply 2.6GW of PV modules, utilizing TopCon technology, while CATL will apply its TENER technology for the battery storage system.
Masdar highlighted that the facility will provide unparalleled stability and efficiency in renewable energy generation by addressing the intermittent nature of solar power, setting a new global benchmark for clean energy innovation.
