SSEN Transmission Publishes Final Reports on Overhead Line Projects to Support Renewable Energy in Scotland

has released two final reports on consultations for proposed 400kV overhead line projects in , designed to facilitate the delivery of . The projects are part of SSEN Transmission's wider efforts to upgrade the transmission network in northern Scotland under its £20 billion “Pathway to 2030” investment program.

One of the projects involves a new 400kV overhead line running from Beauly to Peterhead, passing through Blackhillock and New Deer. The line will include four new substations and new HVDC converter stations at both ends. The report confirms the final route alignments for planning consent and development.

The company has conducted four rounds of public consultation since September 2022, hosting 53 events to gather public feedback on the proposed route.

A second project, involving another 400kV overhead line running from Spittal to Beauly via Loch Buidhe, will include three new substations. This consultation process included three rounds of feedback on the route and an additional three rounds of discussions on substation locations. In total, 37 in-person events and one virtual event were held to engage the public.

Both projects are central to SSEN Transmission's plans to enhance the region's energy , supporting the UK's clean power and energy security objectives. The upgrades are expected to connect high-voltage, renewable energy to homes and businesses across Scotland and the wider UK.
