The U.S. offshore renewable energy sector is driving significant economic growth and creating new jobs, according to a new report from the Oceantic Network. The report, Offshore Energy at Work, highlights the role of offshore wind in revitalizing American industries, including shipbuilding and steel production, as well as advancing the country’s energy security.

Oceantic’s findings show that a US$25 billion wave of investments in the supply chain has contributed to the growth of shipbuilding and steel production, with $1.8 billion in vessel orders placed across 21 U.S. shipyards. These investments are not only supporting a skilled workforce but are also enabling shipyards to build larger and more competitive vessels for the global market, the report says.

The offshore wind industry is helping to transform U.S. ports, equipping them with advanced industrial capabilities, and creating new manufacturing and steel production opportunities. Oceantic Network’s team collected data and visuals throughout 2024, documenting the progress made across the country in building a domestic offshore wind industry. Their report showcases the contributions of skilled workers such as welders, engineers, and shipbuilders, and highlights nearly 2,000 supplier contracts across a national supply chain.

Liz Burdock, CEO of the Oceantic Network, emphasized the positive economic and job impacts of the industry: “The American offshore wind energy industry is creating thousands of jobs across a national supply chain, driving billions in supply chain investments, and delivering reliable, homegrown energy to meet our country’s growing power needs while ensuring energy security for decades.

Burdock added: “This report tells a story of success, momentum, American ingenuity, and grit. Offshore wind energy is creating skilled jobs, revitalizing once-forgotten economies, and offering new opportunities for personal growth and economic prosperity, proving that when offshore wind is working, so is America.
