Jones Bros Civil Engineering UK has achieved a notable safety milestone, recording 500,000 working hours without a lost time incident (LTI) at the 220-megawatt North Kyle in Scotland. The £300 million project, led by Brockwell Energy, features 49 Vestas turbines and employs up to 250 workers on-site.

An LTI refers to an injury that results in lost productive time, preventing an employee from performing regular duties. To foster safety, Jones Bros implemented its “Together Safer” initiative, which promotes open communication about unsafe practices and encourages collaborative problem-solving to enhance workplace behavior.

Jonathan Maitland, project manager at Jones Bros, praised the collective effort: “To have reached around 2,000 Incident Prevention Cards shows just how important the wellbeing of others is to the entire team. Everyone has worked together to ensure that all personnel, including subcontractors and employees of Brockwell Energy, go home safely to their loved ones.”

The milestone was celebrated on-site with a barbecue, adding to prior recognitions for achieving key safety goals. Brockwell Energy project manager Richard Buckland highlighted the significance of the achievement, given the challenging site conditions: “The site environment has presented a real challenge given its natural state and historic use. Couple that with a tight construction programme, and this achievement is proof that having a safety initiative with collaboration from everyone can be achieved.”

Despite weather-related obstacles, Jones Bros completed the final concrete pours for turbine foundations in under a year. The project underscores the importance of proactive safety measures in high-risk construction environments while demonstrating the feasibility of maintaining rigorous health and safety standards during large-scale developments.
