Amazon has signed power purchase agreements (PPAs) to support the development of three utility-scale wind farms in Greece, aligning with its commitment to carbon neutrality by 2040. The projects, developed by Dublin-based Aer Soléir, will contribute to Amazon's goal of matching its electricity use in the region with renewable energy while aiding Greece's transition to a greener energy system.
The wind farms—Vermio North, Vermio South, Mesokorfi, and Koukouras—are located across the Western and Central Macedonia regions and the Peloponnese. Construction is underway, with power generation slated to begin in 2026. Together, these facilities are expected to produce enough clean energy annually to power nearly 200,000 Greek homes.
The projects align with Greece's National Energy and Climate Plan, which targets over 80% of electricity from renewable sources by 2030. They also bring economic benefits, with the Vermio wind farm alone creating over 100 construction jobs and up to 300 roles at peak activity.
Lindsay McQuade, Director of Energy for EMEA at AWS, said the new wind farms “mark an important milestone” in Amazon's renewable energy expansion in Europe, adding to over 180 wind and solar projects across the continent.
Andy Kinsella, CEO of Aer Soléir, emphasized the collaboration's significance: “We are proud that our projects are significantly contributing to the Greek Government's renewable energy goals and are delighted to be partnering with Amazon.”
Aer Soléir, backed by Quantum Capital Group and 547 Energy, is investing over €500 million in Greek wind projects. The ventures are supported by financing from the National Bank of Greece, the European Union's Recovery and Resilience Facility, and local partner Enteka.
