Japan's Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL) and Kansai Electric Power Company have signed a memorandum of understanding to jointly explore the development of a liquefied hydrogen carrier, marking the first collaboration of its kind in Japan between a shipping and power generation company.
The study will focus on designing optimal vessels for the marine transport of liquefied hydrogen, ensuring operational safety, and evaluating compliance with international laws and regulations governing such shipments.
The partnership aims to lay the groundwork for establishing a hydrogen supply chain, which is critical for advancing hydrogen as a clean energy source.
This agreement underscores Japan's commitment to developing a robust hydrogen infrastructure, as part of its strategy to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050.
Both companies will leverage their expertise to address the technological and regulatory challenges associated with transporting liquefied hydrogen, a key element in scaling up the hydrogen economy.
