Canadian Solar Inc. has unveiled a new manufacturing and research facility in Shelbyville, Kentucky, focused on producing utility-scale battery energy storage systems.
The new site, established under the company's energy storage unit, e-STORAGE, represents a major expansion in the U.S. energy storage market.
The Shelbyville plant will initially have a 3 GWh annual production capacity, with plans to double that to 6 GWh in the coming years. Production is slated to begin in late 2025, with full-scale operations expected by early 2026.
This USD 712 million (EUR 674.7 million) investment is the largest economic development project in Shelby County's history and is expected to create 1,572 high-tech jobs.
Spanning 1 million square feet (92,903 square meters), the facility will also include an on-site research and development lab to promote collaboration with universities and further innovation in energy storage technologies.
