The Moray West Offshore Wind Farm in the outer Moray Firth, off Scotland's northern coast, has completed the installation of its 60th and final turbine, marking a significant milestone in its development.
The Siemens Gamesa SG 14-222 DD turbines are part of the 882-MW project, which remains on schedule to become fully operational in 2025. Ocean Winds, the project's developer, emphasized the achievement despite challenges including extreme weather, supply chain constraints, and grid connection issues.
Commissioning and testing of the turbines will now take place following the completion of the installation phase. The first turbine was installed in April 2024, and the project produced its first power in July. Once fully operational, the wind farm's 14.7-MW turbines are expected to supply enough electricity to power 1.3 million homes annually.
Moray West is part of a broader push by Ocean Winds to expand its presence in Scotland, where it is set to become the largest offshore wind operator. The project is expected to contribute more than GBP 800 million to the Scottish economy over its operational lifespan, providing a significant boost to local industries and communities.
Ocean Winds, a joint venture between EDP Renováveis and Engie, spearheaded the project, with a minority stake held by UAB Ignitis Renewables. The successful delivery of Moray West further underscores Scotland's growing role in the global offshore wind sector and its commitment to renewable energy development.
