Mammoet has signed a contract with Buss Ports to manage the marshalling of wind turbine foundations for two major offshore wind projects: RWE's 1.6-gigawatt Nordseecluster A in Germany and the 1-gigawatt Thor project in Denmark.
The agreement involves the phased load-in, storage, and load-out of 116 XXL monopiles at Buss Terminal Eemshaven in the Netherlands. These monopiles, the largest weighing up to 1,700 tonnes and measuring 96 meters in length, will be handled using Mammoet's specialized heavy transport equipment.
The monopiles will be offloaded onto the quay using a roll-on/roll-off (RoRo) linkspan ramp and transported by Self-Propelled Modular Transporters (SPMTs) fitted with saddles. Afterward, the SPMTs will move the foundations onto storage dunes until they are ready for transport to installation sites in the German and Danish North Sea waters.
“This is a complex marshalling operation, with large components for both farms needing to be moved and managed on a single site,” said Wouter Santen, Mammoet project manager. “Combining our specialist heavy transport equipment with our engineering experience of monopile handling, we are delighted to support the development of these significant offshore wind projects concurrently.”
Marc Wegman, managing director of Buss Terminal Eemshaven, emphasized Mammoet's expertise in monopile handling: “Having them by our side during the planning stage has been invaluable. We look forward to working with them as we move into the assembly phase.”
