Deutsche Bahn AG (DB) has entered into a power storage agreement with German renewable energy company Iqony to utilize a significant portion of the capacity of a 50-MW/200-MWh battery system.
The system will be constructed at the Duisburg-Walsum power plant site, operated by Steag Iqony Group, and is expected to be commissioned in May 2026. Fluence Energy Inc., a global energy storage provider, has been selected to build the facility.
Under the terms of the contract, DB Energie will have access to 35 MW of the battery capacity for five years. This arrangement will allow Deutsche Bahn to enhance the flexibility of its green electricity portfolio and support its ambitious goal of becoming climate-neutral by 2040.
Florian Reuter, CEO of DB Energie, emphasized the importance of ensuring trains operate even when renewable energy sources like solar and wind are not available, highlighting that the battery system will store surplus renewable energy and provide grid support when required.
Iqony's project is noteworthy for its innovative design, featuring a four-hour battery capacity, which is twice the typical two-hour duration seen in most German projects.
The agreement also allows DB Energie to access energy storage without owning the assets, providing greater flexibility in its energy management strategy.
