US-based lithium-sulfur batteries developer Lyten has reached an agreement to acquire the former lithium-metal battery (LMB) manufacturing facility in San Leandro, California, previously operated by Swedish battery manufacturer Northvolt's subsidiary Cuberg.
The acquisition follows Northvolt's decision earlier this year to shift its LMB technology development from California to Sweden, leading to nearly 200 job cuts.
Lyten plans to convert the 119,000-square-foot facility into a production site for its lithium-sulfur batteries and expand its capacity to support up to 200 MWh of lithium-sulfur battery production at full capacity.
The facility, which includes manufacturing, office, and warehouse space along with battery cell development equipment, is situated near Lyten's San Jose headquarters.
As part of the expansion, Lyten will invest up to USD 20 million (EUR 18.8 million) in 2025 to further develop the San Leandro and San Jose sites.
Lyten is focused on the commercialization of next-generation lithium-sulfur batteries for diverse markets, including transportation, aerospace, space, consumer electronics, and energy storage. The company also has interests in sensors and composites. Recently, Lyten announced plans to build a gigafactory in Nevada, capable of producing up to 10 GWh of batteries annually.
