Fortescue Future Industries (FFI) has announced a conditional agreement with Statkraft, the largest renewable power generator in Europe, to supply renewable energy for FFI's Hemnes green energy project. This will involve the supply of electricity from the Norwegian grid to power a planned 300MW green hydrogen and green ammonia facility, with the potential for further capacity to support future scale-up of the site.
Speaking about the potential of green energy projects, FFI Norway Country Manager Thor Magnus Rovik said, “Green energy projects have the potential to create a new industry and jobs in the Hemnes region, and FFI is looking forward to working with the local community and industry to make that happen.” He also highlighted the importance of this deal in reducing greenhouse emissions in Norway and across Europe.
Hallvard Granheim, EVP Markets at Statkraft, emphasized the significance of the PPA for contributing to green industry development and decarbonisation. “Green hydrogen and green ammonia are two of the solutions needed to help decarbonise society – and reach the net-zero target,” he added.
FFI is exploring opportunities across Norway for the development of green hydrogen and green ammonia, with initial studies identifying the Hemnes region as having real potential for future green energy and port facilities. The PPA with Statkraft is conditional upon a positive Final Investment Decision for the Hemnes project.
This partnership between FFI and Statkraft highlights the importance of collaboration between the private and public sectors in promoting green energy projects and decarbonization efforts. With the potential for job creation and industrial development in the Hemnes region, this project serves as an example of how green energy can benefit local communities and the environment.
