The Low Carbon Contracts Company (LCCC) has signed a record 130 agreements under the Contracts for Difference (CfD) Allocation Round 6 (AR6), marking the highest number of deals ever signed in a single round. The projects, once operational, will add 9.58GW of renewable energy capacity, raising the total CfD capacity to 34.74GW.
AR6 includes a diverse range of technologies, from established wind and solar power to emerging sectors such as tidal and floating offshore wind, strengthening Great Britain's renewable energy portfolio. The contracts support the UK's broader decarbonisation goals and help accelerate progress toward a net-zero future.
LCCC Chief Executive Neil McDermott commented: “With the contracts for AR6 now signed, we are proud to announce a significant expansion in our renewable energy portfolio. This groundbreaking round increases our capacity by 9.58GW to a total of 34.74GW and features a broad range of technologies from well-established wind and solar to nascent technologies like tidal and floating wind. The success of AR6 not only advances our commitment to decarbonisation but also accelerates our journey towards a net-zero future.”
Energy Minister Michael Shanks noted: “We acted decisively to increase the budget for Allocation Round 6, delivering the most successful renewables auction to date. Securing more clean energy projects is how we protect billpayers from volatile fossil fuel markets, strengthen energy security and deliver our mission to make Britain a clean energy superpower by 2030.”
The CfD projects secured in AR6 are set to play a pivotal role in driving innovation in the renewable energy sector. ScottishPower was awarded contracts for two projects, including its East Anglia 2 offshore wind farm, which will add 963MW of clean energy by 2028/29. Ross Ovens, managing director of offshore development and operations at ScottishPower, said, “We've been moving at pace since our success in the auction to confirm the supply chain for our £4bn East Anglia 2 wind farm, which will produce enough renewable electricity to power the equivalent of almost one million homes.”
LCCC's continued involvement is vital in fostering private investment in renewable generation, helping to build a resilient and sustainable energy system for future generations.
