Axian Energy, an Africa-based project developer, announced plans to build two solar plants with a combined capacity of 60 megawatts (MW) in Senegal's southern Casamance region, aiming to electrify rural areas.
The Kolda solar farm, part of the initiative, is expected to become the largest photovoltaic plant with a battery energy storage system (BESS) in West Africa upon its completion in 2026.
The Kolda project has secured €84 million ($89.27 million) in funding, including from the Dutch entrepreneurial development bank (FMO), contributing to a total investment exceeding €105 million.
Once operational, the solar farm is expected to provide clean energy to approximately 235,000 households in the underserved region. Additionally, the 72 MW of battery storage will help ensure a stable power supply.
