The Hy.Region.Rhein.Ruhr eV association, focused on accelerating the hydrogen economy in Germany's Rhein-Ruhr region, has announced that the Port of Antwerp-Bruges has become a new member. The addition of the port further strengthens the association's efforts to establish the region as a leading European hydrogen hub through international collaboration.
The association, which includes over 50 members from business, science, and municipalities, aims to enhance the development of the hydrogen sector in the Rhine-Ruhr area. The membership of the Port of Antwerp-Bruges is seen as an important step in fostering cross-border exchanges and advancing the hydrogen economy.
Ports play a crucial role in hydrogen import and distribution, and the Hy.Region.Rhein.Ruhr network already includes key ports such as Duisburg and Rotterdam. The Port of Antwerp-Bruges, which is one of Europe's largest seaports and the second-largest chemical cluster globally, is preparing to handle and distribute hydrogen derivatives within the decade.
Richard Schroeter, a representative of the Port of Antwerp-Bruges, commented on the new collaboration, stating, “Membership in the Hy.Region.Rhein.Ruhr network enables us to contribute our hydrogen infrastructure and expertise, further expand it, and, in cooperation with the Rhein-Ruhr region, continue to advance a smooth hydrogen value chain.”
