Axian Energy, part of the Pan-African Axian Group, has obtained EUR 84 million in financing for a 60-MW solar project with battery storage in Senegal.
The Kolda project will see the construction of two photovoltaic parks paired with a 72-MWh battery energy storage system, with the total investment exceeding EUR 105 million.
Emerging Africa & Asia Infrastructure Fund (EAAIF), Dutch development bank FMO, and German finance institution DEG led the financing.
EAAIF and FMO each provided EUR 30.5 million, while DEG contributed EUR 23 million. Set in Senegal's Kolda region, the complex is expected to meet the electricity needs of around 235,000 people upon its 2026 launch.
Expected to be the largest solar facility with integrated storage in West Africa, Kolda will deliver renewable energy to support Senegal's 2030 target of 40% renewable capacity.
The battery system will provide three hours of backup power during evening peak periods, enhancing the region's energy resilience.
