Austrian electric utility Burgenland Energie AG has made significant progress on its 164-MW agri-photovoltaic (PV) power plant, which, upon completion, will be the largest facility of its kind in Austria.
Since the commencement of installation works in April 2024, approximately 210,000 solar panels have been mounted, representing 80% of the total panels. The plant, located in the district of Neusiedl am See in Burgenland, is expected to become operational in early 2025.
The 180-hectare facility will feature a unique moveable panel system, utilizing a tracker that enables the panels to follow the sun, increasing energy production by an estimated 10% compared to traditional fixed PV installations. This agri-PV project will be integrated with Austria's largest wind farm in Andau, creating a hybrid agri-PV-wind park.
This initiative aligns with Burgenland's broader goal of achieving energy independence by 2030, with the state currently reaching 60% energy self-sufficiency. The project underscores the region's commitment to expanding renewable energy infrastructure.
