Masdar, along with its partners, has reached a significant milestone in the development of its first wind project in Kazakhstan with the signing of a 1GW wind farm investment agreement during COP29 in Baku. This milestone agreement was witnessed by key leaders, including Kazakhstan's Deputy Prime Minister for National Economy, Nurlan Baibazarov, and Masdar's chief executive, Mohamed Jameel Al Ramahi.
Situated in Kazakhstan's Jambyl region, the project will include a 600MWh battery system, enhancing energy stability. This wind farm is expected to play a critical role in accelerating Kazakhstan's energy transition, aligning with the nation's target of sourcing 15% of its energy from renewables by 2030.
Construction is slated to start by the first quarter of 2026, with Masdar leading development alongside partners W Solar, Qazaq Green Power, and the Kazakhstan Investment Development Fund.
“With Masdar's proven success in implementing large-scale renewable energy projects worldwide, we are confident that this 1GW wind farm will have demonstratively positive impact in its surrounding region,” said Al Ramahi. “In our ongoing collaboration with the government of Kazakhstan, as well as our valued partners…we're excited to see the continued growth of this project and the benefits it will bring to the region.”
This landmark initiative highlights the expanding UAE-Kazakhstan strategic partnership, with the UAE Minister of Energy and Infrastructure Suhail Mohamed Al Mazrouei noting, “Today marks an important milestone…and highlights the strength of our strategic partnership. We are proud to support Kazakhstan's net-zero ambitions while…tripling global renewable energy by 2030.”
