Octopus Energy's generation arm, in partnership with actor Idris Elba, has launched its first renewable project in Africa, a wind farm on Sherbro Island, Sierra Leone. The announcement, made at the World Climate Conference (COP29) in Baku, Azerbaijan, marks a critical step toward improving energy access and supporting economic development in the region.
The project will see the installation of up to five wind turbines with integrated solar panels and battery storage near Bonthe, Sherbro Island's main town. The construction is set to begin next year and aims to bring reliable power to an area where only 5% of rural Sierra Leone currently has access to electricity. The project will support local infrastructure, powering schools, medical facilities, and local industries like fishing.
“We're building not just a wind farm but a foundation for sustainable growth and energy independence in Sierra Leone,” Elba said. “With the turbines scheduled for installation next year, it'll stand as a powerful testament to our commitment to a cleaner, greener future for Sierra Leone and beyond.”
Octopus Energy Generation CEO Zoisa North-Bond added, “The wind farm – the country's first – will expand energy access, generating clean power and job opportunities in the local economy and community. Partnering with Idris and his team, we're committed to being part of Sierra Leone's journey as a renewables leader – and this is just the beginning.”
Data gathered from this project will provide insights on local wind patterns and energy demand, creating a foundation for future renewable investments across Sierra Leone, where the government has set an ambitious goal to achieve 85% renewable electricity by 2030.
