TotalEnergies Renewables Australia Pty Ltd has received approval from the Independent Planning Commission (IPC) of New South Wales to develop the 320-MW Middlebrook Solar Farm, which will also feature a 780-MWh battery energy storage system (BESS).
The decision comes with conditions aimed at addressing public concerns raised during the consultation process, including more than 50 public objections.
The project was initially approved by the state Department of Planning, Housing and Infrastructure in August but was referred to the IPC due to the objections.
To mitigate community concerns, the IPC has imposed conditions related to vegetation screening, soil surveys, dust control measures, and a comprehensive management plan. The developer is also required to submit a decommissioning and rehabilitation plan once the facility reaches the end of its life.
Located about 22 km south of Tamworth, the Middlebrook Solar Farm is expected to generate enough electricity to power around 122,200 homes annually.
The addition of the BESS will enable the storage of excess solar power for release during peak demand periods, enhancing grid reliability.
