Seatrium has signed a Letter of Intent (LOI) with Japan's Penta-Ocean Construction (POC) to undertake early engineering work for a 5000-tonne fully-revolving heavy lift vessel (HLV) aimed at supporting Japan's growing offshore wind industry.
Pending a final investment decision by POC, the full engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) contract is anticipated to be awarded by the first quarter of 2025.
POC, a leading Japanese marine contractor, owns various dredgers and turbine installation vessels, including those with lifting capacities of 800 tonnes and 1600 tonnes, and is expanding into offshore wind. The company has been involved in several large-scale projects in Singapore, such as Pasir Panjang Terminal and Tuas Mega Port.
William Gu, Executive Vice President at Seatrium Energy (International), expressed excitement about the partnership: “We are thrilled to collaborate with Penta-Ocean Construction on our first project for the Japanese offshore wind market. This marks a significant step in our commitment to providing innovative and cost-effective solutions to accelerate the global energy transition.”
Tetsunori Ohshimo, Senior Managing Executive Officer at POC, added: “The HLV equipped with a 5000-tonne crane will be vital for installing heavier monopile foundations required by larger wind turbines. We are confident it will play a key role in Japan's offshore wind development.”
This project underscores both companies' dedication to advancing offshore wind infrastructure in Japan, as the country moves toward expanding its renewable energy capacity.
