China Energy International Engineering Co. (Energy China) is set to start construction on a significant 1GW solar photovoltaic (PV) project in Iraq, located in the Artawi region of Basra.
Developed by TotalEnergies' renewable energy division, this project is part of a broader US$27 billion energy initiative between TotalEnergies and the Iraqi government, initially signed in 2021 and revived in recent years after political delays.
TotalEnergies awarded the engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) contract to China Energy in August 2024. The project, expected to break ground later this year, involves Energy China's Tianjin Electric Power Construction Co. and Southwest Electric Power Design Institute Co. and will include a 132 kV booster station to support the PV plant.
The solar plant is scheduled for completion by early 2027, with construction involving detailed design, procurement, and commissioning.
This milestone project is a pivotal component of Iraq's push towards diversified and renewable energy sources, as it aims to reduce dependence on fossil fuels and enhance its energy infrastructure.
