Renova, a Japanese renewable power producer, has announced that the commercial operation of its 49.9-MW Karatsu Biomass Power Plant will be delayed until March 2025, a shift from the originally planned December 2024 start.
The delay is necessary to allow for additional adjustments to the boiler and turbine to ensure the plant operates smoothly and sustainably in the long term.
As a result of the delay, the project's feed-in tariff (FIT) sales period has been extended to November 30, 2044. Additionally, Renova has faced Liquidated Damages under the Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) contract due to the postponement of the plant's opening.
The biomass-fired power plant will utilize wood pellets and palm kernel shells (PKS) as its primary fuel sources. Once operational, it is expected to generate approximately 350,000 MWh annually, providing enough electricity to meet the needs of around 110,000 households each year.
