Portuguese utility EDP announced on Tuesday that its 150-MW BigBATT battery project has been awarded funding from the European Commission's Innovation Fund.
The project, slated for installation at the Ribatejo combined-cycle power plant in Portugal, is the first medium to large-scale battery storage initiative to receive approval under this scheme.
BigBATT aims to bolster grid flexibility by storing renewable energy, thus helping to stabilize supply and demand and support the energy transition.
EDP's goal is to reach over 500 MW of storage capacity worldwide by 2026, highlighting its strategic investment in energy storage as a critical tool for clean energy integration.
The BigBATT project joins EDP's other European Commission-backed projects, including the GreenH2Atlantic hydrogen initiative and the Asturias H2 Valley, solidifying the company's role in Europe's clean energy development.
