RIU Hotels & Resorts Partners with Iberdrola Mexico to Power Five Hotels with 100% Renewable Energy

Spanish hotel chain RIU Hotels & Resorts announced on Monday it has secured 100% green and emission-free for five of its hotels in through an agreement with Mexico, a subsidiary of Spanish energy company Iberdrola SA.

Under this agreement, RIU will power three hotels in de Banderas, one in Mazatlan, and one in Guadalajara with . This transition to clean energy is expected to prevent the release of over 35,200 tonnes of carbon dioxide annually, contributing significantly to the company's sustainability efforts.

The renewable energy supply includes International Renewable Energy Certificates (IRECs), which confirm that the energy used is sourced from Iberdrola's wind or photovoltaic farms in Mexico. This move aligns with RIU's sustainability initiative, Proudly Committed, which prioritizes environmentally friendly operations across its properties. Daniele Camponovo, RIU's Director of Operations in the Mexican Pacific, shared that expanding the green energy agreement to additional hotels in Mexico may be considered in the future.

This partnership builds on a previous long-term agreement between the Iberdrola Group and RIU Hotels & Resorts to supply green energy to RIU's properties and headquarters in Spain, marking another milestone in RIU's commitment to sustainability across its global operations.
