Edison has signed a long-term biomethane purchase agreement (BPA) with Kanadevia Inova for the off-take of biomethane produced from agricultural byproducts in Italy. The 15-year agreement marks a significant step in the transition to renewable energy, as Kanadevia Inova plans to complete the construction of its biomethane plant in Cuneo, Italy, by the first half of 2025. The plant is expected to produce approximately 3 million cubic meters of biomethane annually.
This partnership enables Kanadevia Inova to enter the Italian biomethane market, while Edison strengthens its position in the green gas sector, expanding its renewable energy portfolio. The deal supports Edison's strategy to help its customers, particularly energy-intensive ones, reduce their reliance on carbon-intensive energy sources and purchase European Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS) allowances.
“Thanks to this agreement, Edison strengthens its position in the Italian and European green gas market, offering customers a competitive solution to reduce their exposure to ETS securities,” said Fabio Dubini, EVP of gas & power portfolio management & optimisation at Edison. He added that the agreement further solidifies Edison's commitment to supporting its customers' decarbonisation journeys with increased shares of green gas such as biomethane and bioLNG.
Kanadevia Inova's executive vice president, Keith Carr, emphasized the significance of the partnership in advancing the company's mission of resource circularity and decarbonisation. “This collaboration with industry frontrunner Edison is the final piece in bringing our vision of a true resource circularity, decarbonisation, and sustainable energy supply to life,” Carr said. The biomethane plant will use a wet anaerobic digestion process under the DFBOO (design, finance, build, own, operate) model, transforming agricultural waste into valuable energy and supporting regional decarbonisation efforts.
