EDF Renewables North America has partnered with Arizona Public Service (APS) to secure a power purchase agreement (PPA) for its 250-MW/1,000 MWh Beehive battery energy storage system (BESS) project, which is scheduled to commence operations in 2026.
The 20-year agreement, announced by EDF Renewables on Monday, will see the installation of the Beehive lithium-ion battery in Peoria, Maricopa County.
This standalone battery system is designed to provide four hours of storage capacity, allowing it to store energy from the grid during periods of high renewable energy generation and release it during peak demand.
Installation for the Beehive project is set to begin in 2025, marking EDF Renewables' second standalone energy storage initiative.
“By adding Beehive to APS's already diverse power supply, it will be better equipped to provide reliable, affordable and cleaner energy to its customers, even in the absence of sunlight,” stated Dai Owen, Senior Vice President of Origination and Power Marketing for EDF Renewables.
