Bulgaria has approved 249 renewable energy and battery storage proposals worth BGN 526 million (USD 293.1 million/EUR 268.9 million) under its National Recovery and Resilience Plan (NRRP). The Energy Ministry completed the evaluation of investment submissions across two procedures designed to expand renewable energy and battery capacity in the country.
The first funding call, aimed at projects between 200 kW and 2 MW, awarded BGN 107.5 million in grants to 200 projects selected from 327 initial submissions. These projects, with a combined value of nearly BGN 107 million, will contribute 435 MW of renewable energy and 176 MW of battery storage capacity. Proposals that did not qualify have been added to a waitlist with a value exceeding BGN 44 million.
The second call, targeting projects over 200 kW, allocated BGN 427.5 million for 49 selected proposals. Out of 70 initial entries, 65 advanced to the qualification stage. These projects, representing an investment of almost BGN 419 million, will add 2,660 MW of renewable energy and 1,000 MW of storage.
All projects are expected to be operational by March 31, 2026. Additionally, the Energy Ministry is preparing a tender to subsidize at least 3,000 MWh of new energy storage units.
