A consortium of companies in Uruguay is set to commission the country's first green hydrogen plant in 2026, following a USD 38.6 million (EUR 35.5 million) investment aimed at producing fuel for heavy-duty trucks used in timber transportation.
The Kahiros green hydrogen project involves local partners, including renewable energy firm Ventus, forestry company and pulp miller Montes del Plata, logistics provider Fraylog, and Fidocar, which distributes Hyundai fuel-cell trucks intended for the initiative. Spanish banking group Santander is financing the project, as announced during the project's presentation.
Located in Fray Bentos, the Kahiros facility will feature a 2-MW electrolyser powered by a 4.8-MW solar farm, generating 36 kg of green hydrogen per hour. The plant will also include a hydrogen filling station to supply six Hyundai trucks operated by Montes del Plata, which is the project's primary customer.
The project has received an environmental permit, allowing it to proceed with installation plans, as confirmed by Uruguay's Ministry of Industry, Energy, and Mining.
