India's AM Green has solidified its partnership with Belgian mechanical engineering specialist John Cockerill by placing an order for electrolysis technology to support a 1.3 GW green hydrogen-to-ammonia project in Kakinada, Andhra Pradesh.
This agreement marks what is touted as India's largest electrolyser deal, which will be executed in two phases of 640 MW each. John Cockerill will supply the first batch of advanced pressurised alkaline electrolysers, while the remaining electrolysers will be produced at a new manufacturing plant in Kakinada.
The partnership will establish India's largest electrolyser manufacturing facility with a production capacity of 2 GW per year. The engineering, procurement services, construction management, and commissioning (EPsCm) services for the hydrogen-to-ammonia facility will be managed by Rely, a joint venture between John Cockerill and Technip Energies.
AM Green made a final investment decision (FID) on the hydrogen-to-ammonia project in August. The facility will be integrated into an existing urea plant in Kakinada and is expected to produce one million tonnes of green ammonia annually.
This project aligns with AM Green's broader goal of achieving an annual production capacity of 5 million tonnes of green ammonia by 2030. The Kakinada facility has received certification from CertifHy, confirming its compliance with EU RFNBO requirements for green ammonia, which includes standards for additionality and renewable energy timeliness. A portion of the plant's output is set to be exported to Europe.
