Danish shipping giant A.P. Moller-Maersk announced on Wednesday the signing of a long-term agreement with China's LONGi Green Energy Technology for the supply of bio-methanol starting in 2026.
This agreement aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from Maersk's expanding fleet of dual-fuel methanol container vessels, with seven currently in operation.
“The major deal with LONGi further confirms the ability of bio-methanol to achieve significant greenhouse gas emissions reductions in this decade,” Maersk stated.
The company highlighted that both bio-methanol and e-methanol are among the most promising alternative fuels for shipping, although the price gap with conventional fuels remains a key challenge to achieving net-zero emissions.
Maersk reiterated its call for member states of the International Maritime Organization to implement a global green fuel standard and an ambitious pricing mechanism, which the industry urgently needs to create a level playing field.
