India and Germany Unveil Green Hydrogen Roadmap to Accelerate Climate Action

India and have launched the “Indo-German Green Roadmap” to promote the market ramp-up of and enhance cooperation in climate action and sustainable development. The announcement was made during the seventh round of India-Germany Inter-Governmental Consultations (IGC) held on October 25, 2024, in New Delhi, co-chaired by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and German Federal Chancellor .

The roadmap is designed to support India's goals for the production, usage, and export of green hydrogen while facilitating its adoption as a sustainable energy source in both countries. This initiative builds on the “Green and Sustainable Development Partnership (GSDP)” announced during the sixth IGC, which serves as an umbrella for bilateral cooperation in environmental sustainability.

Following the outcomes of the sixth IGC, the two nations also introduced the “India-Germany Innovation and Technology Partnership Roadmap.” They highlighted the progress made under existing initiatives and reaffirmed their commitment to financial and technical cooperation within the GSDP framework.

Cooperation under the “Indo-German Renewable Energy Partnership” has emphasized innovative energy solutions, green hydrogen, and other renewable sources, along with grid integration and investment in the renewable energy sector.

Additionally, in 2024, India's Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) issued guidelines for establishing hydrogen hubs under the National Green Hydrogen Mission, launched on January 4, 2023. This mission aims to position India as a global hub for the production, usage, and export of green hydrogen and its derivatives.

The Indian government has also introduced a scheme to retrofit existing vessels for green hydrogen use, which includes developing bunkering and refueling facilities at ports for green hydrogen-based fuels.
