Solarcentury Africa Secures Financial Close for 20-MWp Solar Project in Namibia

Solarcentury Limited, in partnership with Sino Energy (Pty) Ltd, has reached financial close on a 20-MWp project in . This project is poised to become the first fully merchant independent power producer (IPP) to trade its entire output directly into the regional grid.

Located in the Otjozondjupa region, specifically in Otjiwarongo and Outjo, the facility is designed to generate 51 GWh of clean electricity annually.

It will connect to the Gerus substation and the main North-South transmission network. The plant plans to sell all its power on the Southern African Power Pool (SAPP) and will also be able to serve contestable customers within Namibia under the new Modified Single Buyer (MSB) rules.

The solar farm is slated to commence operations in the third quarter of 2025. 's trading arm, Solarcentury Trading, will manage the sale of its output, being a member of the SAPP.

The project is wholly owned by Solarcentury Africa, which is providing the necessary financing for its implementation, supported by its parent company BB Energy. The estimated investment of USD 20 million (EUR 18.5 million) ranks it among the largest British investments in Namibia to date.

Sino Energy will serve as a co-developer, while local contractor Alensy Energy Solutions Pty Limited has been assigned the engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) works.
