OnPath Energy has completed the sale of its shares in the 67MW Kype Muir wind farm extension in South Lanarkshire, Scotland, transferring full ownership to funds managed by Schroders Greencoat LLP. The 15-turbine project, notable for being the first in the UK to feature turbines with 200-meter tip heights, reflects significant technological advancements in the renewable energy sector.
Since 2021, Greencoat UK Wind plc has been involved in the project, initially through a loan that converted to a 49.9% stake in late 2023, helping to finance the extension when onshore renewable projects in the UK faced numerous challenges. With the construction complete, Schroders Greencoat has now acquired the remaining 50.1% of shares in the project.
The Kype Muir extension began producing renewable energy in December 2022, delivering up to 67.2MW of power—enough to meet the annual electricity needs of about 53,700 homes. Together with the original Kype Muir wind farm, the combined 41 turbines produce over 153MW, sufficient to power over 123,700 homes and offset carbon emissions equivalent to removing 30,700 petrol cars from the road annually. Gordon Thomson, projects director at OnPath Energy, emphasized the project's pioneering nature: “Kype Muir wind farm extension is a groundbreaking UK project being the first to construct 200m turbines and a product of OnPath Energy's progressive development philosophy.”
Local communities are set to benefit from a £10 million package tied to the project, supporting environmental and social initiatives throughout the wind farm's operational life. Thomson highlighted OnPath's commitment to further renewable investment, aiming to support the UK's net-zero goals while enhancing energy security and promoting a fair energy transition.
